Zingerman's
Final Four On March 13, Zingerman's Deli held a special tasting known as the "Raucous Caucus" to determine their "Best Sandwich Ever" and donated all of the proceeds to Peace Neighborhood Center. It was a wonderful occasion and we are grateful to everyone at Zingerman's for making it happen.
This unique event began as the brainchild of Peace Neighborhood Center board president Al Newman as he decided to run through the Zingerman’s menu starting at #1 and rate each sandwich. At first, this was merely a personal goal and something to amuse himself with over lunch. However, as the project progressed, it began to snowball into something larger. Al then got the idea to place the sandwiches into a 64 team (65 with play-in) bracket akin to the annual NCAA College Basketball Tournament held every March. Using the rating system he developed, Al systematically ate each sandwich and “advanced” the best ones through the tournament until he finally arrived at a very exclusive Final Four.
During the course of this extensive, and tasty competition, Al’s project became a major talking point among Zingerman’s staff and customers. It seemed that everyone had their own opinions on which sandwiches should be included in the Final Four. Controversy swirled around which sandwiches on the Zingerman’s menu actually were the best.
Finally, the controversy was put to rest as Zingerman's patrons voted on their favorite sandwiches and their Final Four faced off against Al's in a fight for the finish at the event. Those in attendance had the chance to sample as many of the final eight sandwiches as they could eat and vote on their favorite. In the end, after the dust settled, the winner was:
Of course, Peace Neighborhood Center was the real winner and we would like to thank everyone who contributed to such a special fundraiser. In addition to the contest, local bands Gemini and the Munchung Trio performed and guests engaged in an auction to name their own sandwich. It was a terrific evening and we look forward to teaming with Zingerman's again in the future. |
